About the Montessori Method
Sonoma Charter School is based on a number of the Montessori methods of teaching. "Montessori environments are organized to promote competence, choice, personal acknowledgment, and self-discipline, all of which contribute to feelings of success. In the long run, the goal of growing up is to be able to take care of oneself and the environment, and the Montessori environment supports the child's sense of independence and autonomy." - (Montessori in Contemporary Culture).
Students in kindergarten through third grade classrooms are taught through the use of Montessori materials. By following the teaching practices of Maria Montessori, students progress at their own pace, while teachers provide standards-based instruction. In fourth through eighth grades, teaching practices include differentiated instruction with the Montessori philosophy as the cornerstone of instruction.
Teacher assistants spend a portion of the day in each classroom increasing student contact and furthering their success. The invaluable Teacher assistants are a powerful part of our learning programs.

Morning Ceremony
Every morning, weather permitting, the entire school meets together in the courtyard to begin the day. Student government leads the Pledge of Allegiance and World Pledge, and announces any birthdays or special events. On a rotating basis, classes may share student writings, music, art, or our director or teacher may share a message. The morning ceremony begins our school day and reminds us all to respect all human beings, living things, school and personal property.
World Pledge
I pledge allegiance to the world
To cherish every living thing
To care for earth and sea and air
For peace and freedom everywhere
You've been given the gift of a new day
Receive it, use it as a lifelong quest for knowledge and understanding
So that you may likewise be a gift to the Earth
And all her inhabitants
All interested persons are encouraged to schedule a visit to the school and see first-hand the learning environment at Sonoma Charter School. Please contact the school office to schedule your tour.
